In 1842, a community was estalished on a tract of "treeless land" that would become Elmhurst City Centre. Elmhurst, incorporated as a village in 1882, is now a vibrant, tree-lined community that has maintained its "Tree City, U.S.A." designation for 30 years in a row.

In 1871, Jennie and Thomas Bryan gave land in Elmhurst for the purpose of establishing a school to prepare young men for the theological seminary and to train teachers for parochial schools, which later became Elmhurst College.

The 48 acre campus grounds are painstakingly maintained, and the college boasts an arboretum with more than 700 different trees and shrubs from around the globe.

Elmhurst Memorial Hospital was founded in 1926 as the first hospital in DuPage County. It recently has completed construction of a $450 million main campus.
