Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. It is the fourth-largest planet by diameter and the third-largest by mass. Astronomers named the planets, except for Earth, after deities in Greek and Roman mythology.

In Roman mythology, Neptune was the god of the sea, identified with the Greek Poseidon.
