Anderson Lock is currently preparing for its annual audit by Scientific Certification Systems® (SCS®), a third-party supplier of certification, auditing and testing services. SCS is a leading provider of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) chain-of-custody certification, our link to FSC wood doors.

FSC is promoting the responsible management of forests worldwide to be:

  • Environmentally Appropriate

Protecting and maintaining natural communities and high conservation value forests.

  • Socially Beneficial

Respecting the rights of workers, communities and indigenous peoples.

  • Economically Prosperous

Building markets, adding best value, and creating equitable access to benefits.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) is an international non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. According to information on the FSC website, in 2012, green building represented 25 percent of all commercial and institutional building starts and 20 percent of residential construction, up from 2 percent in 2005. (Source: McGraw-Hill Construction)  Every day, the US Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)* program is certifying 1.6 million square feet of building space. Nearly 9 billion square feet of building space is participating in the LEED program now. (Source: USGBC)  And, FSC-certified wood was found to be the most specified green-building product in McGraw-Hill’s database of 60,000 project specifications collected annually, surpassing even EnergyStar.

Once a forest is certified, it is important to be able to trace the products that come from it throughout the supply chain to ensure that any claims on the origin of the product are credible and verifiable. The FSC chain of custody (COC) certification is a voluntary process. FSC chain of custody is a tracking system that allows manufacturers and traders to demonstrate that timber comes from a forest that is responsibly managed in accordance with the FSC Principles and Criteria. It tracks the flow of certified wood through the supply chain and across borders through each successive stage – including processing, transformation and manufacturing – all the way to the final product.

The “final products” of interest to Anderson Lock are commercial wood doors.

About the SCS logo:
Kingfisher birds are beloved around the world, with more than 90 species occupying a wide variety of habitats. They are recognized by their large heads and long beaks, and known for their keen vision and colorful plumage. Kingfishers are widely recognized as indicators of environmental health. By the same token, they are vulnerable when their habitats are destroyed. Some species are now threatened with extinction, primarily due to forest clearance and degradation.
* LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED enables building owners and operators to identify and implement green building design, construction, maintenance solutions, and operations. The non-profit, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), developed the LEED standard.
