During campus emergencies, it’s vital that students and faculty are prepared to react quickly.

Recent emergency situations in schools and on school campuses have caused many schools to re-evaluate their lockdown procedures. A school lockdown is issued when there’s a threat to students, school staff and faculty. Most campuses have different categories of school lockdown procedures. Types of lockdowns include:

Shelter-in-place: Usually an external health hazard where building evacuations are not recommended.
Internal threat: This threat exists when the danger is inside of the school or campus. The goal of this procedure should be to keep everyone safe until the threat is completely removed.
External threat: This type of threat occurs outside of the school building or campus. The goal of this lockdown is to prevent the threat from entering the school or campus.
Full lockdown:This scenario involves a serious threat that requires immediate action.

Every school has several security zones, each with a unique set of requirements and openings. Classrooms are the innermost security zone in a school. Three distinct classroom lockdown
solutions:
Centralized lockdown: Simultaneous building-wide lockdown controlled by an individual using access control software
Local remote lockdown: A standalone electronic solution activated by a fob within proximity of the door
Manual lockdown: Relies on an individual to be at the door with the right key in hand during a lockdown situation

Security Zones
Classrooms are the innermost security zone in a school plan, while every school has several security
zones, each with a unique variety of opening and security requirements.
A key component of classroom safety is the lockset that equips a classroom door, with many different lockset options available. While they prevent intruders and assailants from entering, all locksets also ensure school staff and first responders who have keys can open classroom doors from the outside. They also adhere to life safety codes and ensure free egress for students and teachers inside the classroom.
