Neil Young titled his 1979 rock record album “Rust Never Sleeps.” The Canadian-American singer-songwriter adopted the phrase from a Rust-Oleum advertising slogan. Rust-Oleum is a manufacturer of protective industrial paints, located in Vernon Hills, a northern suburb of Chicago.

Young’s “My, My, Hey, Hey” track features the lyrics:

“The king is gone
But he’s not forgotten
This is the story
Of a Johnny Rotten
It’s better to burn out
Than it is to rust
The king is gone
But he’s not forgotten.”

“Rust Never Sleeps” marked a major shift in artistic direction for both Young and the entire music industry. By saying, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away…” and “It’s better to burn out that it is to rust…”, the songwriter seemed to be chiding himself to adapt his style to the then-current music scene, which was punk rock… or become irrelevant. The album was certified Gold and Platinum, and Young is listed among the most celebrated artists in American popular music history.

The song’s next verse is:

“Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There’s more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.”

Anderson Lock’s very own rock and roll artist, and service estimator, John Didier, owns the “Rust Never Sleeps” album. He also took these photos of doors that illustrate the rust adage. And, like the song says, “There’s more to the picture than meets the eye.”

Corrosion from oxidation is an unavoidable, persistent process. Hollow metal doors inevitably experience some sort of oxidation and/or corrosion, which ultimately leads to unsightly rust. HM doors require paint to keep rust at bay, and, in many applications, need to be replaced every three to six years.

Hollow Metal Door vs. Hollow Metal Replacement FRP Door

Now, however, Special-Lite® wants you to say goodbye to hollow metal rust problems for good! Their new replacement FRP [fiberglass reinforced polymer] doors are made from durable, low-maintenance FRP.

Anderson Lock stocks light gray FRP replacement doors in two standard sizes, 3’0” x 6’8” and 3’0”x7’0”. They are ready to install—no painting required. In addition to being rust free, they are thermally efficient and feature a patented adjustable lock pocket which supports common commercial hardware sets.

Staying within budget is the priority of managing any commercial facility. However, selecting your doors and frames based solely on the lowest initial cost won’t save you long-term. Hollow metal replacement FRP doors will not rust, rot or warp. They resist dents and scratches with tough through-color FRP door face and injected high-density structural foam core. They are lightweight, with flexible strength, and come with a 5-year warranty, Lifetime against corrosion.
