old and new signs

Out with the old…in with the new…Anderson Lock is moving forward!

It’s here! For several months we’ve been looking forward to the installation of our new electronic sign! It is high-tech! Colorful, electronic messages rotate every ten seconds below red ANDERSON LOCK letters, on stainless steel background, above the shiny brown base. An antenna on the sign communicates with an antenna in my office, and with easy-to-use software I can update info and photos at any time!

For 18 years the monument sign at our Main Office served us well. Several different employees, in all kinds of weather, climbed the ladder to “change the sign.” The supply of plastic letters was limited, so frequently we had to edit the messages because we “ran out of e’s” or other vowels. Some enterprising sign changers created punctuation marks for me, and some were sent back up the ladder to correct misspellings, but, in general, the old sign served us well!

One of my favorite sign stories was featured in a past inDoors blog. Because we are down the street, on the other side of Oakton, from Des Plaines’ Maine West High School, one student asked if he could use our sign to invite his girlfriend to prom.

Alyssa accepts! Look at their smiles! Thomas Didier “changed the sign” to GO HAWKS during 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs.

We’ve employed our sign to help attract new employees, to welcome manufacturers’ representatives, to tell our customers about our capabilities, and to advertise specials and sales.

Our new sign will do all those…in color, with photos, and without the need for a ladder!

In 1996, 35 employees helped move about a million keyblanks, lots and lots of locks, and several truckloads of heavy hardware to 850 Oakton, the fourth home for the locksmith company Gene Anderson founded in 1960. Now we have a second location, our Door Division in Schaumburg, and there are 85 full and part-time employees. However, that number will soon grow, as we are once again seeking people to fill six positions. (Yes, there are only 5 Job Descriptions on our Employment page, but we are also hoping to hire another Maine West student to work part-time. He will have to empty trash, but won’t ever have to “change the sign!”)
