We are thrilled to announce that Gene Anderson, the visionary founder of Anderson Lock Company, has been honored as the first recipient of the “Legend of the Lock Industry” award by Locksmith Ledger. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the locksmith and door hardware industry, and Gene’s name is now deservedly among them.
Gene’s story began in his parents’ Ace Hardware store, where his fascination with keys and locks was ignited at a young age. This early passion set the stage for what would become a remarkable career. As a young man, Gene worked at Central Key & Lock in downtown Chicago, where he honed his skills and expanded his knowledge. By the age of 20, with an entrepreneurial spirit and a keen eye for opportunity, Gene founded Anderson Lock in 1960.
From its humble beginnings as a one-man locksmith shop, Anderson Lock grew under Gene’s leadership into Chicago’s premier commercial door and locksmith service company. Gene’s success was built on innovation, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. He became a distributor for leading lock manufacturers, invested in a fleet of service trucks, and believed in empowering his employees through training and development.
Gene was always ahead of the curve, embracing new technologies and methods to improve his business. In the 1980s, he published the first of six custom catalogs that became invaluable resources for customers, filled with hardware options and technical information. This move solidified Anderson Lock’s reputation as a trusted and reliable partner in the industry. When the Americans with Disabilities Act was implemented, Gene responded proactively with a specialized ADA catalog, showcasing his commitment to inclusivity and customer service.
Gene’s leadership was particularly evident during challenging times. The Des Plaines River floods in the mid-1980s threatened Anderson Lock’s very existence, but Gene’s resilience and the unwavering support of his team saw the company through these tough periods. His ability to inspire and lead by example created a strong, loyal workforce that shared his vision. The company expanded significantly, adding the Door Division in 1995, which specialized in doors, frames, and related hardware.
Under Gene’s guidance, Anderson Lock received numerous accolades and recognition within the industry. Publications like Locksmith Ledger and ALOA’s Keynotes magazine highlighted the company’s achievements, such as installing 400 electric strikes in just 45 days in their April 2000 issue. These accomplishments were a direct result of Gene’s innovative strategies and his focus on building solid relationships with both customers and vendors.
Gene’s contributions to the industry extended beyond his business. He joined the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) and the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI), earning his Architectural Hardware Certificate (A.H.C.) in 1982. An early adopter of technology, Gene launched Anderson Lock’s company website in 1998, further cementing the company’s status as a leader in the industry.
Today, Anderson Lock operates from two locations, with a fleet of 30 red service vehicles and a team of over 100 dedicated employees. Gene’s daughter, Cortney Wascher, took over the leadership in 2007, ensuring that the company continues to thrive and grow while maintaining the values and principles established by her father. Even in his retirement, Gene remained deeply involved, overseeing significant projects like transforming a large facility in Elk Grove, IL, into a new hub for Anderson Lock’s expanding Door Division.
Gene’s impact extended beyond his professional achievements. Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he faced the challenge with the same courage and determination that defined his career. He continued to inspire those around him through video messages for ALS Walks held in his honor, raising over $100,000 for research. Gene’s legacy of strength, positivity, and resilience in the face of adversity continues to inspire everyone who knew him.
At Anderson Lock, we are immensely proud of Gene’s recognition as the first “Legend of the Lock Industry.” His vision, dedication, and innovative spirit have left an indelible mark on the company and the industry. Gene’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.
