Lodge Doors at Giant City State Park

Lodge Doors at Giant City State Park

Anderson Lock will be closed Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day. We will still provide emergency locksmith service, like we do 24 hours a day, every day.

Because many families take one last camping trip on this end-of-summer holiday weekend, we’re featuring a photo of historic doors at the Giant City Lodge, built on the highest point in the Giant City State Park, just south of Carbondale, Illinois. Labor to build the Lodge came from the Civilian Conservation Corps, in the 1930s.  Multi-hued sandstone and white oak timber were two of the native building materials they used. An on-site blacksmith did all of the ironwork. The lock and hinges on these doors are works of art!

The Bald Knob dining room, inside the Lodge, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with an excellent reputation for food and hospitality.

Found in the Shawnee National Forest, the area was named for the unique impressions made by its massive sandstone structures. It features over 4,000 acres of natural beauty and outdoor recreation, including camping, picnicking, hunting and fishing, rock climbing, rappelling, horseback riding, lodging and dining.
